Croatia

August 27-29, 2010

We are determined to do our best about traveling even though it's a lot tougher now with more stuff, not as much spontaneity, and of course always having our new little ones around! Croatia was an easy start. It's just a short drive north, across the Slovenian border and then just pick a town off the autostrada because they all have gorgeous views of the Mediterranean.

We chose Umag. The Doner Kebab guy that Evan sees about once a week is from there and his family owns a donut shop. He talked it up and so our decision was made. We made no plans (not our usual) before going. Just what we needed--traveling for the first time with 2 babies and stopping along the main road asking hotels/apartments for their availability over the weekend. Once we found our place--right on the water, all-inclusive, room on the first floor, plenty of room for the pack-and-play--we were set.

This was such a great weekend and the boys did great! Here we are getting ready for the water. I say water because it's not a beach with sand. There are lots of beach chairs near the water and when you want to take a dip you dive in. The water is a great temperature for swimming.
Porter on the left. Eli on the right. Ready to go in their Aggie onesies from Aunt Jillian.Evan had to get a picture of this car. This was one of our first stops to ask for a place to stay. This house had 4 other apartments set up for lodging. It was WAY off the water and out of the way for us. They must do great with their side business to have this car with red leather seats.
Ready to head outside.
We did some walking around, grabbed some food, dipped our toes in the water, and a few hours later took in the beautiful view.
The next morning we were up with our early risers. All along the water were apartments, hotels, bed & breakfasts which were all connected with a trail. We strolled up and down several times that weekend.
Remember the old paddle boats at the beach or the lake? These were upgraded with a slide. They looked like a lot of fun!
View on our walk.
Sunday morning it was really cold! We were not prepared for the change in temperature hence the shorts.
Signage on the outside of an abandoned casino. WHAT? No gelato? Preposterous!
A morning cappuccino with the boys.
We went off the property Saturday night for dinner to the town center. There was a little train (like at the Houston zoo) that transported everyone back and forth along the water. As soon as we got to our train stop it started to drizzle. We had an umbrella and thought about not going. But you know, if you don't go, it won't rain. Go and it will pour. So we took our chances. Well, it poured and poured and rained and rained and by the time we got to the center we were soaked. We protected the babies in their carseats and they had no idea of any of the madness. We did however, enjoy a delicious dinner and time out as a family. Then, we returned to our hotel. In the rain.

The next day on the way home, we decided to make another try since the sun was out and it was hardly even cloudy. Evan with Porter and Eli.
Walking the streets.
The edge of the bay where we ate lunch.
It really was a perfect day.
The tide is out for now. We ate lunch under the blue umbrellas you see on the left of this picture. By the time we were done with lunch the water was over this little area completely. It was so relaxing to watch it just creep slowly closer and closer to us.
Finished with lunch, us and the boys, and Evan has his hands full.
We had a great first trip altogether. The boys were able to dip their little toes in the Mediterranean, and Evan and I were able to take turns at swimming and enjoying the water.
