WW II Memorial

May 17, 2011

On our way home, we stopped at the Florence American Cemetery and Memorial. It was a nice day to stop and pay tribute to those soldiers who defended our freedoms and helped to liberate Italy as well.
The cemetery site was liberated by the 6th South African Armored Division of the U.S. Fifth Army, on August 3, 1944. It lies near the Greve River and is framed by wooded hills. The government of Italy granted its free use as a permanent burial ground without charge or taxation.

There are 4,398 headstones and 1,409 names of missing in action.
The boys even got out to play in the lush grass and drink their bottles.
