Assisi

May 1, 2011

We woke up to the birds chirping and the most beautiful, Umbrian day awaited our travels. Before we left La Fornace, poppy pictures were a must. Few and far between, but still a nice picture.
Our drive from the agriturismo to Assisi.
Assisi is well-known for St. Francis and mementos of him are everywhere. He, like Jesus taught by example, living without worldly goods and aiming to love all creation. A monastic order grew out of his teachings and were gradually accepted by the Church. While we made it everywhere but the Basilica of St. Francis, we made our mark on Assisi and it made a mark on me.

Beautiful, vibrant flowers and frescoes painted above doorways in the rock walls.
Missy and Henry. WHAT a trooper climbing the stairs and steep hills at 36 weeks. She sprinted up the last one!
The view from the stairway of the parking garage. What a nice reward!
The Basilica of St. Clare was a beautiful and peaceful church. We were able to walk down to St. Clare's tomb and see some relics from her day and time. As we came back up the stairs to leave, it was time for Mass and we were able to hear some singing and chanting. St. Clare fell in love with St. Francis' message and made secret arrangements to meet him, where she willingly entered a life of voluntary poverty and later helped form the Poor Clares.
Assisi overlooks the richest and biggest valley in the hilly and mountainous Umbria region.
A monk near St. Clare's Basilica.
A man with his thoughts.

Over an alleyway.
One of the towns many piazzas.
The Rocca Maggiore from the road.
The Umbrian region.
