Deruta

April 30, 2011

This was the beginning of a Girl's Weekend! A few friends, JAG spouses, and one JAG met at April's house at 6 a.m., WHOA, for a quick bite before the long drive to Deruta. A few of the girls leave this summer so this was their last chance to snag their Deruta pottery. We had to leave early because of the long drive and we heard the stores close early on weekends. April, on the left, with Missy and our breakfast spread.
Ahhh. We finally made it. What an adventure after our car had to detour back around the autostrada for some belongings and really needing to fill up on gas--we made it! The city of Deruta.
We grabbed some snacks, made a few stops in some stores, and realized after reposo they all open back up! Thank goodness we didn't miss out. Roffaldo has a little shop and we were able to go into his workshop. He makes the pottery and his wife and son paint it. He let us "throw a pot" and get our hands dirty. It was a very Ghost moment for me, minus Patrick Swayze.
Me, April, Danielle, and Missy with our finished products. Roffaldo said he would sell them for 100 Euro. Uh-hum. Pretty sure when we left he folded that clay right back up and put it in his plastic bags for the next tourist who walks in and gets their picture taken and put on the wall behind us!
And here she is. Oh how I wanted to wrap her up and put her in my purse. After going to a lot of the shops, Roffaldo's creations and paintings are all very unique. I loved the blue and yellow that is not really shown in my amateur photo.
We really did shop 'til we almost dropped. It was nearly 7 p.m. when we took this photo with all our purchases from our final stop. SO much fun, so exhausting, we didn't eat, we didn't drink, we just shopped. The other two cars made it to the agriturismo and we joined them in time for dinner and BED.
Podere La Fornace. Otherwise known as a piece of heaven on Earth. It was so peaceful and serene and surrounded by Tuscan scenes you see in the movies or on postcards.
Missy and I were roomies, and we stayed up way past our bedtime eating overly-priced but equally delicious strawberries.
