Church. And why we were ushered out.

November 27, 2009 ~ Glasgow

The Glasgow Cathedral. Amazing. The only mainland Scottish cathedral to have survived the Reformation and thought to have originated in the 6th century as a chapel.

Front facade of the cathedral.

Side of the cathedral

Side entrance.

A few steps away from the entry is this cemetery and the hilltop "garden graveyard".

From the front door looking towards the sanctuary.

Stained glass.
More stained glass.
The ceiling--all woodwork.
Vanessa's great-grandmother was baptized in a Catholic church in Paisley, a suburb of Glasgow. We ventured there and had such a great, short time with the priest. He was quite a character--letting us know right away that he would have a "wee view" of the baptismal records but he's a busy man and has a job to do. While he looked for the records he let us look around the church.

Part of the church was destroyed because of war, so when it was rebuilt in the 1950s it made the construction of the stained glass interesting. Notice on the left there is a man with a vacuum--very spiritual.

And on the right, there is a man in a suit and tie and a woman showing her legs--sign of the times.
Well, our faithful priest found the baptismal records and here is Vanessa pointing out her name. We were specifically asked not to take pictures. But of course we immediately asked forgiveness for our sin--we were in church. Then the best part. As Vanessa was determined to find her grandparents wedding records she peered into another book (in the safe by the way)--I mean, we were alone. In a church. And of course here comes the priest shutting the books and putting them away and saying "safe place" and "not supposed to be out" and the such. Then he let us know, as we were ushered out of the side door, that he only had a "wee few minutes" to get to the school before lunch. So funny and very nice for finding the records for Vanessa.

Another massive church on the way out of town.

On to Edinburgh...
